Grok 2.5āpreviously xAIās best modelāfeatures 314 billion parameters with Mixture of Experts (MoE), sophisticated transformer architecture, and commercial-friendly Apache 2.0 licensing.
This release marks a major step in shifting advanced LLM development towards collaboration, transparency, and community-driven innovation, departing from the more closed approaches of competitors like OpenAI. Developers can freely download, run, and modify Grok 2.5 for various commercial and research use cases. However, xAIās license includes restrictions to prevent using Grok 2.5 for training other AI models or direct competitorsāa trend towards ācontrolled open sourceā aimed at balancing openness and competitive advantage.
Elon Musk has publicly promised that Grok 3āthe newest and even more capable versionāwill also be open-sourced in about six months, likely around February 2026.
