Kolkata: Senior Executive Loses ₹1.7 Crore in Bank Scam — How It Happened
A senior company executive in Kolkata lost ₹1.7 crore in just two bank transactions after falling victim to a smart banking scam.
The scam started when the man received a call from someone pretending to be a bank official. The caller said there was a problem with his account and that he needed to update his KYC (Know Your Customer) details immediately or his account would be frozen.
Trusting the caller, the executive shared his bank details and a One Time Password (OTP). Within a short time, he lost ₹1.7 crore from his account in two big transactions.
Example:
Imagine you get a call like this:
"Hello sir, I am calling from your bank. Your KYC needs to be updated right now. Otherwise, your account will be locked. Please share your debit card number, CVV, and OTP.”
Scared that your money might get stuck, you share the details. In minutes, the scammer uses this information to transfer your money.
This is how fraudsters trick people by creating panic and pretending to be trusted officials.
How to stay safe:
- Never share OTPs or card details with anyone.
- Banks never ask for sensitive information on calls or messages.
- If you get such calls, hang up immediately and call your bank’s official number.
- Always double-check any link or app before clicking.
Stay alert, and don’t let your hard-earned money vanish!
