Pune:Fake e-Challan Scam via WhatsApp APKs
Beware! Fake Traffic Challan Scam Hits Indian Cities
A new cyber scam is targeting people across India, especially in places like Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Fraudsters are sending fake traffic challan messages on WhatsApp, claiming you have unpaid fines. The message urges you to download an “RTO Traffic Challan” .apk file to see or pay the fine.
Once you install this fake app, it secretly gives hackers full access to your phone. They can read your messages, steal your banking passwords, intercept OTPs, and transfer money without your knowledge. In Pune, a woman recently lost over ₹7 lakh after she installed such an app. Another student lost ₹2 lakh in a similar scam.
How to stay safe?
✅ Never download .apk files sent via WhatsApp or SMS.
✅ Check your genuine challans only on official websites like echallan.parivahan.gov.in.
✅ Use trusted apps from the Play Store only.
✅ Be careful if any app asks for too many permissions.
If you receive such suspicious messages, do not panic. Report them on cybercrime.gov.in or call the helpline 1930.
Remember: One click on a fake app can cost you lakhs. Share this with family and friends to keep everyone safe from this growing scam.
