Kolkata: How One Stolen Phone Travelled Across India!

A Rajkot businessman was tricked by cybercriminals from Jamtara, Jharkhand. Posing as bank officials, they asked him for OTPs in the name of KYC updates and used his credit card to buy three expensive phones worth ₹5.6 lakh.

Police tracked the phones using their IMEI numbers. After two months, one Samsung phone got switched on in Kolkata. Cops traced it to the wife of a well-known Kolkata lawyer. The lawyer had bought the phone legally for ₹49,000 from a reputed store—sealed box, GST bill, and all.

But here’s the twist: that phone was originally bought using the Rajkot businessman’s stolen money.

Now, the Kolkata lawyer is also a victim. He’s filed a complaint, and the police are investigating how a stolen phone ended up in a legal shop. Meanwhile, the Rajkot cyber police are still chasing the fraud gang in Jamtara.

Moral: Even if you buy a phone legally, it could be linked to a scam. Always buy from trusted sources and beware of unknown calls asking for OTPs.
