How Online Scams Work in India & How to Protect Yourself
Online scams in India have grown rapidly, targeting people across age groups and professions. Fraudsters often pose as bank officials, dating partners, government agents, or tech support to manipulate victims into sharing personal or financial information. Common scam types include UPI frauds, fake job offers, loan app scams, sextortion, phishing emails, and fake investment opportunities.
Scammers typically use psychological tricks like urgency (“Your account will be blocked”), greed (“You’ve won a lottery”), or fear (“Police case against you”) to trap victims. Many scams originate via WhatsApp, SMS, social media, or phone calls. Some even build fake websites or apps that look authentic.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Verify before trusting – Always confirm identities independently before sending money or documents.
- Never share OTPs, PINs, or passwords – No bank or company ever asks for them.
- Avoid clicking unknown links – These could be phishing traps or malware.
- Use secure apps only – Download from official app stores and read reviews first.
- Stay updated – Follow government advisories or cybercrime awareness campaigns like by CERT-In or RBI.
- Report scams – Call 1930 (cybercrime helpline) or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
